On June 25, 2009 Michael Jackson transitioned from this life to the next. The enormity of his untimely death will be felt for a long time. However, it is his life and his legacy that will forever be remembered. Like others, it has only been during this tragic time that I’ve realized Michael Jackson was and always will be the ultimate entertainment avatar. In many ways I took Michael for granted simply because he was always there.  I remember he was there during my childhood as Thriller played on my Fisher Price turntable over and over and over gain. Although the Thriller video was so scary that it took a few times before I had the courage to watch it all the way through. Michael continued to be there when my mentor taught me how to blend beats with Off the Wall and whatever Bmore club tracks were popular at the time. MJ was even there when I used to cut school & go practice my skills at Nitro’s place. We used to backspin MJ all day long, loop ‘mama say mama sah ma ma kuh sah’, throw some club beats on top, and record the sessions to make our first mixtapes. These memories and countless others come to mind when I think of Michael Jackson’s music. Every house party, every corporate function, every wedding and every barbeque, he was there. Michael’s work has influenced so much of my musical life that I really can’t comprehend it; and to multiply that influence by the countless numbers of lives that have been shaped in some way or another by his sounds as well as his humanitarian efforts is amazing. We have truly lost the greatest entertainer that has ever lived. Rest in peace Michael, your energy, your spirit, and your music will live though all of us forever.
