The Definition Of A Mixtape: Wale June 9, 2008

Being a Baltimore native, I have been somewhat familiar with DC rapper Wale. However, I haven’t paid him as much attention as I have since hearing his new mixtape, which by far is the best mixtape I have heard….EVER. Wale’s “The Mixtape About Nothing” is a conceptually artistic and cohesive piece of hip-hop genius. In true Sienfeld fashion, Wale seamlessly weaves together songs about everything and nothing smoothly and simplistically so that anyone and everyone can receive his message. Topics include state race relations in America, the death of the music industry as we know it, various relationship topics impacting the male-female dynamic, and more. Musically expect to hear old school soul, new school hip-hop, DC Go-Go, and even Baltimore Club influences (extra points are in order for that one). And of course this Sienfeld concept album, I mean mixtape, wouldn’t be complete without Sienfeld snippets, the infamous Michael “Kramer” Richards rant, and even a drop from Julia Lewis-Dreyfus (Elaine). In short, do yourself a favor and download this already certified classic album (mixtape) now, and in the meantime check out some of my favorite tracks.
